labels

labels. we give them to everyone. the tall one, the short one. the funny one. the fugly one (!). the fat one. the hot one. the creepy disgusting nerdy one. the lone black dude. the white nerd. the asian geek.

Labels tend to be an easy, convenient method for shelving people into parts of our (seemingly organized) brains. Evolution, single-serving, 1st impressions, call it what you will, but no matter how PC we try to make ourselves (Politically Correct lah), we tend to just stick to the big picture. It's easier. Saves time.

Labels: is it fair though? Well, it all depends. Is it racial stereotyping? Do we automatically assume that just because a person is black that he likes fried chicken? Or that a Chinese fellow is good in math? Or an indian person loves spicy food? Or a malay person is much more brand-conscious? Is it fair to label someone according to race group by traits that supposedly these people are genetically prepositioned to have?

Labels, again is it fair to use them on everyday people, by just calling someone the funny man just because he is full of jokes and always expecting him to entertain you. All. The. Time. Or is it fair to use labels to mark the quiet person as anti-social, anti-party, anti-conversation and just ignore them, giving them their own space and automatically assuming they wont want to come? Again it all depends. Are these labels fair? Do these people go out of their way to make themselves the loudest in the group? the funniest? Do they primp and style themselves to make themselves stand out? or do they just stand in a corner, ignoring advances?

Labels are fundamentally human, we are evolved to constantly spot patterns and judge as such, these help us make decisions, but unfortunately this makes us prone to jumping to conclusions. Behind each label we assign, there is a human being, full of complex emotions; a personality enigma that will probably take us a lifetime to understand, and even more so, because honestly, deep down, who really understands themselves? But on the other end of the spectrum, do we even have time to try and understand every single person we come across in life?

I've always viewed life as a joke.

What defines a good joke? usually a story, not too long, not too short, just enough to keep the audience mesmerized, with a twist at the end of the tale. or a riddle, with just enough of a pun or a twist to get the reaction of surprise, the guffaw, the burst of LOL-ness, the snorting and the trololols and wakakas. A good joke, is one that delivers a sufficient enough twist, a satisfying payload, a punchline, if you will, that is both unexpected as it is borderline relevant.

Life:

Everything is so funny. things unfolded expectantly, and the only constant thing about life is how absurdly inconstant it was, how inconsistent, how irregular. Everything unfolds in one direction, then ends in another; everything feels like unwrapping a square shaped package to reveal a round object, or walking down a staircase to find yourselves at the top floor. Or walking into a bar with a priest, a monk or a rabbi.

Like revealing the punchline at the end of a joke, the more unexpected, the better.

Expecting the unexpected becomes a norm, then the norm becomes the riddle, and suddenly the expected is unexpected, the straight becomes the crooked, the corners become the bends.

The villain lives, the hero dies. the duck walks, the chicken flies. the undertaker laughs, the clown cries. the balloon drops, the anvil floats up high.

life is a form of humor. black. dark. light. bright. funny. depressing. whatever.

Someone commented that i lead an interesting life and have a very interesting blog... hmmm ironic really since it's been so long since i've updated... but well, thanks alot =D

How's my life been so far? Well i missed a metro bombing in Moscow last year and very recently, on the day i was due to fly to Paris, there was a suicide bombing in the arrival terminal of the main Moscow airport, Domodedova, leaving 35 dead and 130 injured. i was transiting in Coppanhagen airport when i heard the news, and let me tell you it is not some memory i would be likely to forget...

i m extremely lucky. Have been throughout the whole trip as well. Thank Buddha for that. Someone speculated that it was because i am a nice person. hmmm karma coming in play? I thank that person abundantly, but i doubt i have done so much good in my life to warrant escaping deaths... Someone up there in the skies must really love me, and i thank You.

and yes, i do take care of myself and try not to take risks (most of the time) but really, when someone explodes in front of you i believe the only thing you Can do is say "cheers" and hope by god that you have lead a good life, and done enough good to either grant an entry into the pearly gates, or go crashing into hell fiery demon that you are =D

will start my travel journals soon enough, happy valentines to all. Coincidently, this day is also random act of kindness to strangers day, and also on 1876, 14th february, Alexander Graham Bell patented his famous invention, the telephone. burn your phone bills you lovers out there =D

Whether you've been single for a while, were recently dumped, or decided to kick your ex to the curb, there are many advantages to flying solo. Not to worry, you won't be bored; here are some tips on what you should do with your newfound time.

10. Work out

Everyone knows that we tend to get lazy when we have someone. Some men shave less often, while some women dress less sexy. These may be stereotypes, but surely you agree. If this is so, then why not take advantage of your newfound single status and hit the gym? For one, you will get in shape and feel better about yourself, and second, who knows, you may meet someone that catches your eye while on the treadmill.

9. Seize the moment

I know many will blast me here, but you need to get it all out of your system, especially if she did the dumping. Is there a female friend you always wanted to get to know better? Well, get to know her. Is there a spot you wanted to hit? Take a trip. Did you want to try a new haircut or style? Now is the time. Whatever you do, be careful, but go all out. Nothing sucks more than missed opportunities.

8. Be bad
I am not going to urge anyone to have sex in a church, slap a priest, cause harm to others, or any such deviant practice (well, the first one may be cool...), but do things that will make you feel young and slightly carefree. While some men play the good boy next to their bad girlfriend, most men are usually forced to tame up a bit when they are taken, so when you are single, go crazy; it's debauchery time.

7. Volunteer

We are always caught up in our own world, rarely seeing beyond the tip of our noses. One great way to open one's blinders is to help others. Not only will you meet interesting people, but you'll also get some perspective into your life and will likely end up cherishing what you have even more.

6. See your friends

My friends make fun of me for going out often... very often. They tease me even more when I meet someone interesting because my focus changes -- drastically. While this is slightly normal, I do urge all men to never forget the boys; the boys will be there for you when (and if) things end, but she may not. So if you happen to be single, then make sure that you enjoy your friends' company and always show them your gratitude.

5. See your family

One of my personal concerns is not seeing my family nearly as often, or as much, as I should and desire. Reasons range from work and social life to other matters, so if you happen to free up some time after saying goodbye to the ex, then take the opportunity to visit the folks, take out the siblings and even say "hey" to the grandparents.

4. Take a vacation

While it is indeed great to take a trip with a loved one, it may be twice as good to take a trip with friends or even by yourself. There is no better way to find yourself, seek new avenues and clear your head. So leave the pictures of the ex at home and head out for some adventure.

3. Improve yourself

This is an extension of working out, but it entails improving one's diet, getting rid of nasty habits, finding your dream job, and doing what you have always set out to do but never had the chance to. I know, easier said than done but trust me, nothing will make you forget what's-her-name faster.

2. Explore a new world

So you limit yourself to Sports Illustrated , macaroni and cheese, and beer? Why don't you try something else for a change? No, I am not encouraging you to read Henry David Thoreau's Walden (although it is a good read), but you should do something new and different. Trust me, you will thank me for it.

1. Look ahead

Yes, you should live in the moment, take the plunge and seize the opportunities. But one must also ask where they came from to know where they are going. No one needs a 25-year plan laid out; I don't know where I'll be in 25 days . But if you wish to attain your goals, then you need some sense of direction.

So anyways, what has been going on in my life?

All juniors have more-or-less arrived.

Orientation (as said earlier) was saturday and it was great. Kudos to the OC.

Went to Old Arbat street to visit the antique camera store ahpek and try my hand at street photography on a famous tourist spot

Went to the embassey to have a meet n greet wif the newly elected minister of sports n youth of msia.

The hamster that i so lovingly cared for (well tried my best to anyways) little siaw bee passed away. *sniff2* ur little furry nose will be missed.

Went through my Orthopedic Trauma cycle and wrapping up my Facultative Therapy Cycle (thats Internal Medicine for all u Msians) soon...

My Scanner Is Here. photos will be up here soon, i swear. well, a select few anyways, dun wanna overload my dear readers' brain space and bandwidth. (ok, whatever's left of my reader base)

1 word: awesome. the crowd was awesome. the venue was awesome. the atmosphere was awesome. the run was awesome. even the squeeze during the q to get my shirt was awesome. My 1st ever international marathon run, and it was fantastic.

Freebies!!! Free shirt, free red bull, free glow in the dark band. Lost my number thou, so sad....

the distance, 5km. my target? 40 mins. My time? 38 mins. Not bad for someone who cramped halfway and hopped awhile =p

... of abortions and revelations

Russia is an open country. in many ways. it allows freedom of religion. of race. of cultural habits. it does not force its people, or restrict them in any way according to race. it does not condemn people, and politically at least, there is no discrimination. no one is imprisoned for celebrating any festival too early, but that is another topic for another time. All in all, it allows it's people to make their own decisions, their own way.

unfortunately, it's also a country where abortions are completely legal.
Now don't get me wrong. i completely respect free will, choice and self beliefs. i understand that this is a human right, that humans have a right to choose what they want. i am not about to choose a side now, i am just here to present completely unbiased fact. i am neither pro-life or pro-choice. Again, i m not trying to influence anyone in any way, these are raw STATISTICS.

ok, now that we have the disclaimers out of the way, here goes.

1. Abortions are completely free, meaning anyone can walk into a clinic or hospital and have an abortion done, no questions asked, F.O.C.

2. the avergae age of abortions range from the age of 16 to 35.

3. Out of 10 women in Russia, only 3 decide to have their child. Meaning 7 people choose to get abortions.

Now what do these facts tell us? For one, they let us understand that Russian women are truly open to having abortions. the sheer numbers if people choosing not to bear children is a statement to this. Social stigma, while still there, is almost non-existant. At a time where pre-marital sex and one night stands run rampant, this almost opens an opportunity to people to fool around. I'm not saying that guys shouldn't be held responsible, in fact, most guys would probably pounce at the chance to take advantage of women, no strings attached, but as the saying goes... a single hand wont be able to applaud.

the very act of legalizing abortions has opened a different prespective to humans. Everyone gets caught up in the heat of the moment, regardless. However, this legal option opens up the window to irresponsibility in grown adults, grown up, of course, only in stature but not in mind. Many younger people, married couples, probably opt to abort due to financial instability or just through personal choice. i am not talking about these people. i m referring to those who choose to have sexual relations with people they have met only once, and made the irresponsible choice to forego contraception, not only risking pregnancy but the spread of STDs as well. This could be the reason of Russia being the fastest rising country of AIDS in the world.

The very act of allowing youngsters to get rid of their "burden" from passion could be convenient, but also raises alot of morality issues. Imagine ur daughter, one day just walking into a clinic. Young school children fooling around with the backing of the law. How different is this from people just throwing their babies in dumpsters, the way its done in Malaysia? Alot actually. For one, irresponsibility will always exist, but here, its LEGAL. Resources are being spent by the government,in a way that seems to be saying "go ahead, fool around, we'll clean up your mess" Young people become more daring, since they can always openly walk into a clinic and solve their brand new problem free of charge, no questions asked.

Of Course, exceptions for allowing abortions exist. Criminal abortions, for 1. Ironically, in recent years, rape victims in Russia are choosing NOT to abort, and statistics show that percentages are decreasing year after year. This was explained by our lecturer as due to the opening of more children homes. Another reason would be medical abortions, that is if the foetus somehow endangers the life of the mother. This could be easily solved by allowing a loophole in the law.

For me, at the end of the day, human life is valuble. Like i said, i am not pro-life, i do not stubbornly insist that abortions should not be done no matter what, i understand completely some couples deciding not to have children. However, i feel that people should be held responsible to their acts, and not view abortions lightly. Just my 2 cents worth. Feel free to argue ur point

2day marks the end of my 1st week of classes, got my zachoot for derma on tues *big smiles* now i'm currently in my Obstretics And Gynaecology cycle, which is unfortunately located 1 n a half bloody hours away, meaning i have to wake up at 5.30 everyday =_=see the 2 black circles? i live on the lower black circle, konkova of orange line, i have to travel all the way up-north to the last station on purple line, & i have to do it Every. Single. Day. for the next 2 And a half weeks... FML.

3. We all have experienced some form of insomnia before, loss of sleep is normal when you've spent the whole day reading about sores, swollen and rotten limbs, gangrene, syphillis, gonorrhea, crabs and other disgusting medical conditions oozing pus. You know those pictures they now stick on cigarette packs? We see them every patho lesson. Senior students see patients
with such conditions everyday. Lung cancer, stomach ulcers, you name it.

Tell me you can sleep with an image of that imprinted in your brain.

AND if not from the images, many of us also face sleepless nights anyway, with over-cramming of textbooks and swarming of information ringing in your ears. Sore butts, carpal tunnel syndromme and stiff necks induced by BCS (Book Cramming Syndromme)

4. We. Have. No. Life.

Case in point, i spent 80% of my holidays doing electives in the hospitals, with no pay and little gratitude. Most of my friends are medical students, and when we hang out most of the things we discuss are Medical cases we saw. Depressing? Our life orientates around medicine. "Watched the new medical thriller pathology yet?" "What happened in Greys Anatomy?" "How much did you buy that Littman? Speaking of which, what colour should i get?"

5. Some of us poke each other and draw blood for practice, and to see how it feels.

I have the scars to prove it. Ouch Joshua. 4 TIMES?

6. Most of us are sadists at heart, either congenital ("existing at birth" to all you non-meds) or made. We all want a glimpse and a hand at new and interesting cases, RTA (road traffic Accidents) and freak incidents. We croon at hearing that someone witnessed some new medical phenomenon, and wish we had the chance to see ~~people suffer~~ extraordinary and exotic symptoms.

7. We see people as medical conditions. Fat dude? Potential heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and joint problem. Skinny guy? Possible endocrine problems or malnutrition. Person crying? Depression. Someone laughing? The best medicine. Skin too dark? Risk of melanomas. Fair complexion? Body does not produce enough melanin. In fact, anything can become a case of medical interest to us in time.

Apple? One a day's supposed to keep us away. Also serves as a good source of fiber and vitamins and minerals....

Okay, i know this post comes abit late since this movie is like damn old by now, but for all of u who have not watched it, WATCH it. Especially dog lovers out there, this movie is about the world's worst dog ever, but somehow, u just wish that u had a dog just like him.

Funny not to the point of being crazy, touching not to the point of being fake, this has all the makings of a nice, warm weekend movie, perfect to cuddle up to. ^^

OKAY.... i think i've put off this post for long enough...

Basically, this year we (we meaning my batch) were in charge of organizing MASSAD, and we wanted to make it the most hyped event of the year. The success rate? I'll let you be the judge of that.

I got this e-mail today. Funny stories with morals that actually make sense...

Lesson 1:

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her

shower, when the doorbell rings.

The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.

When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbor.

Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.'

Lesson 2:

A priest offered a Nun a lift.

The priest nearly had an accident.

After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg.

The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'

The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up

her leg again.

The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.'

Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.

Lesson 3:

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch

When they find an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out.

The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.'

'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas ,

driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.'

Puff! She's gone.

'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing

on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas

and the love of my life.'

Lesson 4

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.

So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a

sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story:

To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey,

'but I haven't got the energy.'

'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull.

They're packed with nutrients.'

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough

str ength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of

the tree.

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:

Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..

Lesson 6

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird

froze and fell to the ground into a large field.

While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.

As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize

how warm he was.

The dung was actually thawing him out!

He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.

A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow

dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:

(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your

friend.

(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep

your mouth shut!

Ok, sorry for the late post, i've been ~~busy~~ lazy recently. anyways, here's my long-delayed post abt my 6-day-stay in hell::

FYI, i was admitted due to Rubella, a.k.a. German Measles.

A thermometer soaked in ethanol, the 1st thing that caught my eye while being admitted

My room, where i was ~~imprisoned~~ quarantined for 6 days

how i obtained my meals those few days. the outer window was opened and food was placed into the cubicle, and i took the food from within by opening my own window.

The only human contact those 6 days was when, 3 times a day, a nurse would come in and give my intra-muscular injections (a.k.a. injections in my bottom) 10 injections a day in the 1st 2 days, and 6 a day the following days. my arse n thigh muscles (m. gluteus maximus) still hurt just thinking abt it >< My bathroom. Guess what? Glass walls. haha so people outside can peek in. the whole hospital was a quarantine zone though, meaning no visitors and patients walking around, so the only people watching in would be nurses in case u fainted or something. all the same, i only took my baths deep in the middle of the night. Not used to the whole "stripping in public" thing yet
my bathroom tap, which oddly reminded me of a star wars star fighter. (i know, geek. so sue me)

Next up, my meals....

Breakfast::
See the pattern? basically everyday it was oatmeal that tasted like glue, bread so stale u could taste the mould, and a cup of tea, which was ok, except that the cup it came in was so small 2 gulps finished it off.

Oh, and if the spoon looks extra large to you, it's not an illusion, the spoon was normal sized, it was the plates that were small. the size of saucers to be exact. On the last day i had coffee, but it tasted watered down.

Lunch::
The best meal of the day, honestly speaking, usually consisting of a soup, either borscht, or some other potato soup, some rice or pasta, and sometimes, some meat, either liver (eew), or chicken neck(....) and the chicken was always boiled.

Dinner::
Again, same as breakfast, portions were painfully small, with a rice or pasta, fruit, and... kefir, a.k.a. sour milk, or yogurt if u will. Watery, sour yougurt.
Honestly speaking though, the kefir was the onli thing that actually tasted... normal.
The best meal i had in the hospital. Potatos with salmon. and an apple that was still crunchyweird cabbage/salad thingy. tasted like rubber
Again, potatos and salmon. This time the salmon tasted weird, and the pear was bruised. i still enjoyed it though, take it or leave it, right?

On leaving, only did i knw tht the building that i've been living in for 6 days looked like this::

Which immediately prompted my friend to say i was enjoying life in my 6 day hotel stay. Right... like i could even leave the room right? heck this was the 1st time i even saw the outside of the building for heaven's sake
The whitehouse-esque admittance block. Since i was sent here VIP style in the middle of the night by an ambulance though, i din get to see it properly the 1st time. The ambulance was more like my ride though, it picked my up taxi-style from my hostel wif my stuff packed, i wasnt carried in wif a stretcher if u were wondering.

Anywhow, the whole reason i was admitted was because my disease, German Measles, being highly contagious (it's air bourne) and very dangerous to foetuses, plus the fact that i stayed in a hostel, made me a public hazard. "Patient Zero" if u will. I was admitted not for my own pretection, but to protect the general public. The whole experience was horrible, and believe me, i never ever want to go through it again.

Although i do know how it feels now to have a nurse take off my pants 3 times a day to shove 3-4 needles in a row into my bottom. Ouch.

Ali never ceases to surprise me. he can be smiling one moment n shouting the next.
Yesterday during class i think i closed my eyes for the equivalent of a few seconds, tired ma, i din even doze of, in fact i still had my pen in my friggin' hand.
he literally screamed at me, then chased me out of the classroom. i waited in the hallway for him to come out, then had to beg him to let me back into the class, showing him the notes i did etc.
This is one crazy mf i tell u. phew i was lucky to escape wif my head intake. He let me back in the class with the condition that i never sleep in his lessons again. i don't think i'll be able to sleep even by thinking of his screams. 1st time i actually begged a teacher to let me back in the class after being chased out. i must be turning soft...

Anyways on a lighter note guess wht my Biochem teacher's name is? Nikolai Nikolaevich, prompting us (well me) to affectionately call him 你过来你过来 B*tch, haha he's actually a very nice guy, n he teaches very well... =x

A holiday, a break and.... disaster?

Tomorrow is Men's day, a day meant to commemorate men's efforts in the war, mainly ww2 (for people who don't know what that is, get out from under ur rock, wear a shirt and start reading. A good place to start will be wikipedia.)

Anyways that just means one thing... a holiday! ^0^ (to all u feminists out there, seems fair doesn't it, since there's a women's day, there should be a men's day as well. Sexual equality what.)

However, over the weekend news suddenly popped up that the MMC (Malaysian Medical Council) now makes it compulsory for students in Russian universities to do their yearly electives (attachments in hospitals to learn practical clinical skills) in Russia itself, thus cutting short our summer break by 1 month. I only 1 thing to say to that:

However, ot's not the end of the world. People have been coming up with several good suggestions to solve this problem, such as doing the electives in winter, or doing it after class (4th years.) Here's my 2 cents::

1. Doing it in the summer will make students loathe the fact that they have to have their time in Malaysia cut short. so their heart wont be 100% in the practicals, reducing the effectiveness of the whole thing.

2. Doing it in winter gives us a way to fill the void that is the winter break, when boredom strikes. By doing it in the winter, we also get to experience both electives in Russian and Malaysia (because students who have done their electives in summer in Russia will inevitably skip them in Malaysia, due to the shortened holidays. Agreed?

Coming week the RMSA will have a talk with the dean regarding this matter. I wish them all the best, since my summer holidays rely on them now... >.<>

today officially marks the end of the 1st week of the new sem, n i m seriously pooped. This sem we really have alot of subjects that are borderline useless n completely boring, plus an added "bonus" of having these subjects taught by teachers who are... interesting (a.k.a. complete nutjobs, in both good and bad ways, as u'll see)

1st subject on the list: Hygiene (& prophylactic diseases) Taught by the now notorious prof Ali, known and "loved" by all. He's a Russian, probably Muslim by his name, and completely strict to the max. I mean, seniors have warned us about his "hard as steel" attitude n iron fist method of teaching, but seriously nothing prepared me for him.

His first words in class was to practically scream out "shut up!" then berate students on talking. Mind u, it was only the normal "pass me a pencil" kind of talk, it wasn't like we were screaming or laughing at the top of our lungs. The he proceeded to chase 2 students out of the class for not wearing their lab coats (1st class ma, can't blame them for not knowing this lesson required it) and cautioned us against missing any of his lessons or showing up late, saying that missing 3 classes will automatically guarantee us a repeat year. WTH man. i should go on to mention that after his initial outburst, this was the 1st time in my 14 years as a student i've been in a class with complete silence by the students. it was as silent as the grave...

how ali would look like if he was a comic book character (btw to all u fanboys out there, this is apocalypse from x-men)

oh, and did i mention i have his class first thing monday morning, followed by his lecture? 3 hours 40 minutes back to back Hygiene. somebody just kill me...

On the complete opposite pole of the spectrum is Bio-ethics, taught by a teacher aptly nicknamed "jesus" by our seniors, and rightly so. Not only did he look like the messiah, but he also kept quoting both the old and new testaments of the bible. His lesson was all about our responsibilities about doctors and the values and teachings of great people in the past who contributed to medicine, most notably Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. His lessons were like a discussion session, allowing us to speak our mind, talk about what values we know and openly question philosophy, he was even open to debating and we're required to actually debate certain topics in medicine, such as abortion n euthanasia. Me likey...

The downside? we'll only have an overall 4 to 5 bio-ethics classes this sem. i mean how long can u talk about ethics and values before it starts being superficial? (i'm looking at u, pendidikan moral)

Other new subjects this sem include surgery, which requires us to travel about 1 hour plus to the hospitals for class (argh) but we get to wear surgical scrubs (yay); and immunology, both of which are still a mystery to me, surgery because i havent had a single class yet, immunology because the teacher was absent...

Anyhows, i have a tonne of fotos in my fon that i cant wait to upload n blog abt, but nw i'm just simply too lazy (so sue me)

oh, btw, here's a shout out to all happy couples hu had their own celebration of valentines day yesterday. (and to a certain fren of mine: chill man, it was not a complete rejection, right? still gt hope der~ hahaha)

happy winter solstice, tonite will be the longest night in the year for those having winter in the northern hemisphere... no difference for u guys in M'sia thou. In China, this festival is used to signify the end if winter. come to think about it, why do we even celebrate it in M'sia?

So anyways it's a grand ol' chinese tradition to eat 汤圆 (literally soup round) during this festival. They symbolise the passing of the seasons, and small kids supposedly age a year after eating a bowl. Guess that means most women-folk will give this treat a pass. =p

To honor this age-old custom, i've tried my hand at making my own batch to share with friends. Mind u, this is the 1st & only time i've ever attempted this. The fact that i didn't burn the water, or use wheat flour instead of glutinous rice flour is a miracle in itself. In fact i was so suprised when the cooked balls floated to the surface.

Overall i'll say it was quite a success, but don't take my word for it, according to my friends, they were "delicious", "amazing", "so heart-warming that we can get this here", and
"Really you make one meh?!", which i think sums it up best.

Christmas is just around the corner (as if any of u needed to be reminded) and to honour this festival of festivals, RSMU grounds has been decked out in the lovely extravagant display of jolly cheerfulness.

May i also add that my exams are just around the corner (January 16th!!!) & just as much as i love partying as anyone else, i should tone things down and start studying... Unfortunately everyday i have to be reminded by all the ornaments how much fun i'm missing.

2nd year has been busier then ever, (in fact,i'm updating now while waiting for my sweet and sour chicken to cook.) can be said that i've just finally settled down into life here again, with my fees paid, room cleaned and juniors more-or-less facilitated.

Yes i was facilitator for the new groups of students arriving, bringing them around moscow n sh*t. Shocking eh?

& no matter what you all say, no my main purpose in signing up is not to cuci mata. No, it was actually for a more noble cause... to show off my superiority and act all senior like!!! muahahhahahaz.
Nolar, just wanted to help lar. The juniors all come looking so helpless and innocent and not knowing anything, (reminds me of certain people 2 yeas ago. Not me though, i was Never helpless or innocent. =x)

The US team put on a fantastic effort tonight, beating Greece, a team they once lost to 2 years ago in the world championships 101-95...

Well they certainly showed them tonight. The US dream team finally gave their fans something to dream about, with their aggressive defence that did not let up till the last minute, countless turnovers (18 i think) creaming the Greece team 92-69!

That's why this young US team is now called the "redeem team", showing opponents that this US team is far from the team the were 2 years ago.

One word to sum up tonight's opening ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Olympics::

Awesome.

Another word?

Boring.

Confused?

Let me clarify. The opening was overall very well done and organized.
The performances were large scale and well choreographed, the people were cooperative, the performers made no mistakes.
The venue was breathtakingly beautiful.

The performances were entertaining.

BUT, the whole thing lasted a tad too long. Alot of performances could've been cut short, and some were just overkill.

There is something called too much of a good thing.

Overall though, China did a good job. Good start. Make sure it lasts to the end. As they say in Chinese, make sure it doesn't end up being "tiger head snake tail". i think u guys can easily grasp the meaning.

Ok, first to answer a long-standing question:: What Is Nizhny?

To make the answer easier, let me be more specific, What Are The Nizhny Games?

The Nizhny Games were a set of intervarsity games organised by the Nizhny State Medical University this year. Tradition is that every year a medical university in Russia (with the exception of MIA, an aviation university) will host a set of games aimed specifically at bringing Malaysians in this lovely land closer together. Last year it was my uni. this year nizhny. next year's games will be held in Volgo i think.

Basically all that bullshit means competitions. Between Malaysians. In Russia. Simple enough?

Anyhow this year out of some twist of luck i was selected to go in the basketball team. haha ^.^ so i can report what happened to you guys.

1. Your shower hose reminds you of a trachea

2. You can eat in a same room with a dead body (a.k.a. cadaver)

3. You study organs of dead people like they were just pieces of meat. In fact, the muscles lessons even leaves you somewhat hungry (uhm...beef and mutton) (intestines=kueh chap)

4. You actually understand some of the gibberish House M.D. says. (and still appreciate the wisecracks)

5. you correct people's nicks in regard to anatomy

e.g.::
Sean's nick:: stab a dagger through my lungs so i can breathe.

Me: oi, stab thru lungs they'll will collapse lar. Stab thru trachea instead.

6. people start coming to you for medical advice (which 80% of the time you cannot give...)

7. you know of at least one friend who's:
i) taken a picture with an organ

ii) played with a dismembered organ

iii) played with a cadaver until an organ became dismembered (in the case of a friend of mine, the testicles. LMAO)Not actual picture of the severed... organ

8. anything and everything can be used as a study tool for anatomy.

e.g. balloons for our internal organs::
9. Reading about diseases in the newspapers/online/ in magazines seems just like reading homework.

10. You start having Medical Student Syndrome, aka imagining all sorts of possible diseases when certain symptoms arise (eg imagining stomach cancer when having a simple stomach ache, imagining brain tumours when headaches occur... etc)

Today at my uni we had a tiny "string-instrument orchestra" playing along the walkway outside the lecture halls. There were 3 violin players and 1 cello player. They were playing in accordance to some kind of gallery or exhibition. It seemed kind of grand.
